Malaysia's five-year economic plans are aimed at ensuring balanced and equitable development in the country, and economists believe that it is these plans that enabled the country to survive a 1997-99 recession. Economists also feel that Malaysia's economic planning will prevent the country's economy from being as badly affected as western economies by the predicted US economic downtown.

The Zimbabwe black rhinoceros population has dwindled to a mere 250 animals. Despite an international ban trade of their horns, poachers still kill black rhinos to capitalize on lucrative black market prices. Some protected rhinos have been dehorned to reduce their value to poachers.
