Wider please: the EC tries new tack to open South Korean market
Article Abstract:
The EC has promised to provide South Korea with valuable technologies in exchange for a further relaxation of barriers that keep European firms out of South Korean markets. On May 25, 1993 the EC Commission declared that it was evaluating EC-South Korean relations as a follow-up to the 1991 agreement on intellectual property. EC technology in such industries as chemicals, pharmaceuticals and transport equipment may entice the South Korean government to yield to EC demands for greater opportunities in South Korea's telecommunications and automobile markets.

It's a deal; with China, the EU puts its mouth where its money is
Article Abstract:
The European Union (EU) still officially condemns violations of human rights globally but is encouraging European governments to separate trade issues from politics. France was the beneficiary of this pragmatic policy when French firms won $2 billion of contracts from China, signed by Chinese Premier Li Peng during an Apr 1996 visit to France. The contracts included a $1.5 billion purchase of 30 European Airbus A-320 aircraft which represents a coup in attempting to compete with Boeing in the growing Chinese aircraft market.

Softly, softly: EU wants closer ties with China
Article Abstract:
The European Union is pursuing closer ties with China even as the US's slip further. The EU Commission's long-term plan calls for formal private talks, public pressure, and joint work on China's judicial and legal systems, and downplays concerns over human rights and market access. EU bilateral trade with China rose from $12 billion in 1985 to $40 billion-plus in 1994, though at a $10 billion trade deficit for the EU.
