Still wine production in Germany stands at around 8.5 million hectolitres (hl) a year, with white wine accounting for around 80% of output. Germany exports around 2 million hl annually of wine, with imports standing at between 10 million and 11 million hl a year. Production of red wine is growing in Germany, with the country also making around 3.5 million hl a year of sparkling wine. France accounted for 30% of imports and Italy 40% in 1996, with the UK the primary export market for German wine. Germany's domestic wine market has growth potential.

In 1998, the UK spent 7.1 billion pound sterling on wine, including fortified, sparkling and still light varieties, representing a 10.8% increase on 1998. Still light wine continues to sell well, however, fortified wines have suffered in recent years. Sales of Champagne were up 20% on 1997. An overview of key trends is given, along with market data, consumer trends, details of distribution, advertising, prices, packaging, and forecasts for the future.

The Italian wine market was worth L11 trillion in 1999, or just under 35 million hectolitres by volume. Overall consumption of Italian wine has been in decline. Italian wine market is analysed in detail.
