Tea and coffee in the Netherlands

Dutch tea imports in 1998 amounted to 25,492 t, against 26,946 t in 1997. Tea exports from the Netherlands for the year fell from 9,970 t in 1997 to 9,293 t. Some 25% of Dutch tea imports are from Indonesia, followed by Sri Lanka and Turkey. Tea consumption in the Netherlands amounted to 10,856 t in 1998, up 5% from 1997. Roasted coffee sales in the Netherlands amounted to 120,467 in 1998, up 1.3% from 1997, with imports for the year reaching 22,744 t. Green coffee imports for 1998 fell by 0.6% to 145,344 t. The Dutch tea and coffee markets are dominated by Sara Lee/Douwe Egberts, with a 70% share. Any growth in the markets is expected to be in niche sectors.

UK sales of hot drinks amounted to 200,657 t in 1998, down 3.3% from 1994. Value sales for 1998 reached 1.72 billion pounds sterling, up 15.8% from 1994. The volume market is dominated by tea, accounting for 65.8%, although coffee takes a leading 48.4% share of value sales. Van Den Bergh Foods is the leading maker, with a 14.8% share. The hot drinks market is expected to reach 1.76 billion pounds sterling by 2003.

Tea and coffee in Italy

The Italian tea market is valued at some 343 billion lira, with the coffee market amounting to 2.67 trillion lira. Both markets are set to experience continued growth, although the rate may slow over the medium term.
