Popular priorities
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom legislative program is set out at the opening of parliament when the Queen's speech is read out. The program includes a plan to abolish the right of hereditary peers to vote and this will be followed by an examination by a royal commission of plans to reform the House of Lords. The House of Lords has rejected plans for proportional respresentation for elections to the European parliament, and the government is likely to try again. The government also plans to alter relations between local and central government. Other measures are absent from the program such as a freedom of information bill.

Article Abstract:
Bulent Ecevit looks set to become Turkey's prime minister following elections, as leader of the Democratic Left, the party gaining most votes in the elections. He has previously been prime minister, and sent troops to Cyprus in 1974. He sees the Kurdish problem as related to economic backwardness and caused by Kurdish terrorism. He has developed closer relations with the US and may need US support to gain a loan from the International Monetary Fund.
