Article Abstract:
Marxism Today is a United Kingdom journal which has been revived for a single issue tackling the policies of prime minister, Tony Blair, and the Labor party. The writers are concerned that the government has not tackled some constitutional issues such as freedom of information, and that it has not redistributed enough to the poor, though whether the poor should receive more is a matter of opinion. The writers are also concerned about the state of the world economy, and they cite Paul Krugman as an authority on the need for more regulation. Krugman has only made a case for limited and temporary controls, and the government is correct in not taking on more than it can hope to achieve.

Keeping its powder dry
Article Abstract:
Hamas has not claimed responsibility for a terrorist operation for 11 months, and there is speculation that Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, Hamas spiritual leader, may have an agreement with the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Yasser Arafat. Hamas sees the Oslo accords as a security agreement between Israel, the US and PA, geared to wiping out Hamas, and expects the peace process to collapse. Yassin is seeking Palestinian unity and aims to boost the educational and charitable bodies of Hamas. There is a division of opinion inside Hamas as to whether suicide bombings are worthwhile, since they trigger repression.

Listening Jeb Bush
Article Abstract:
Jeb Bush is Republican campaigner for the governorship of Florida and he has changed his message to become more moderate. His 1994 campaign was described a mission, with his aides called 'gladiators', but he has become a pragmatist seeking to achieve a consensus in 1998. He stresses the importance of listening, which appears to be effective. He supports school vouchers and other central parts of hispolicy, but is more flexible on less central issues.
