Not quite the monster they call it
Article Abstract:
Intel is paying the county of Portland, Ohio, for new jobs created above 1,000 employees in the regional workforce, and this is part of a wider trend of suburbs being protected against urban sprawl. Land is used wastefully, with the population density in the suburbs dropping, yet suburbs are popular. The land is not needed for growing food. Inner cities have been hit by the loss of their middle classes, and unemployment, crime and road congestion have hit some suburbs. Some aspects of public policy, such as the tax system and local government regulations, have increased urban sprawl.

Downtown is up
Article Abstract:
Central business districts are undergoing a revival in the US as demand for office space increases, and couples delay having children, spending longer in cities. Suburban malls had attracted retailers away from city centers, but they are starting to return. Tax increment financing is a tool that cities can use to help fund economic development and foster city center growth. Poorer areas in cities have not been helped by this development, middle class residents are still leaving cities, while job growth is still occurring mainly in suburbs.

Making the desert bloom
Article Abstract:
Egyptians are moving out of Cairo, and into areas of former desert, where new towns are being built. Some new towns have become part of Cairo. The middle class has tended to move. Cairo itself has a low crime rate, and rich and poor live in the city, but the crime rate could change as the richer people leave. The government is increasing the area of irrigated land with the aim of settling 25% of the surface of the country. There is a debate as to whether the water supply is sufficient for some projects.
