Yin and yang
Article Abstract:
South Korea has tended to lag behind and imitate Japan, but this is not true about the way that South Korea has tackled its economic problems. Both countries were left with overcapacity and weakened banking systems after having access to capital that was artificially cheap. South Korea is undergoing a stronger economic recovery, partly because its monetary and fiscal policies are looser. The South Korean government faces problems, such as indebted conglomerates, but it has also made a great effort to tackle the problems of the banking industry, incontrast to Japan.

The Robin Hood of Java
Article Abstract:
Indonesia is to hold a general election on Jun 7 1999, and the country has been hit by divisions following the resignation of President Suharto. The ministery of co-ops and small businesses is headed by Ado Sasono, who is seeking to use co-ops to help small businesses gain greater strength by grouping together. There are obstacles such as ethnic divisions in Indonesia and the risk that corruption could hamper the efficiency of co-ops. A new government may take up his policies.
