The Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) scheme will create additional 2,800 job opportunities when it starts running. The jobs allocation will be as follows: Trustees 250 Custodians 150 Administrators 512 Fund managers 50 Sales people 1,200 Information technology workers 400 However, the government has not announced the exact starting date for MPF scheme, therefore the MPF providers may not invest a lot in hiring and preparation work. The MPF Authority said the starting date for the MPF will be in 2000. *

Fund for jobless proposed

The pro-Taipei Hong Kong and Kowloon Trade Union Council proposed to set up a fund for the jobless people, which will be managed by the Mandatory Provident Fund Authority. The Hong Kong government will have to inject about HK$500 mn for the fund. Under the proposal, employees with a monthly salary of more than HK$4,000 have to contribute HK$50, with employer putting in the same amount. Those who become unemployed will receive at least HK$4,000 a month for three months. *

Manulife Funds Direct (Hong Kong) has launched an on-line trading service on the Internet. The Chinese-language website allows customers to assess their saving and investment needs. Currenlty, the web site achieves hit rate of 15,000 per month, including 20-25% from Hong Kong, 10% from Taiwan and 5-6% from the mainland. It also teamed up with Charles Schwab's online service to launch a global fund. *
