Shake-out in US banks
Article Abstract:
The US banking industry has been affected by an increase in acquisitions following changes in banking laws. Regional banks have attracted most interest but this could change with major banks such as Bankers Trust also becoming involved. The move toward consolidation could lead to deals which are not always in shareholders' interests. There has been criticism of the Bank of Boston, seeking a merger partner, which does not bring a premium generated by a takeover.

Japan: bailing out the banks
Article Abstract:
The Japanese government is likely to help the banking industry which has been hit by bad debts after a drop in real estate prices. The Financial System Stabilisation Committee has issued a report arguing that public funds should be used as a temporary measure to aid banks in trouble. The report has received the backing of the finance minister, and the Japanese stock market has responded well to signs that the government will help the banking system.
