A method for measuring the CO2 dead space volume in facial visors and respiratory protective devices in human subjects
Article Abstract:
An improved method enables accurate measurement of the mean inspired CO2 fraction (Fi,C02) and the external CO2 dead space volume (Vd) in human subjects using welding visors or respiratory protective devices. The method is based on indirect measurements of inspiratory volumes. The accurate assessment requires meticulous respiratory inductive plethysmograph (RIP) calibration and frequent validations of RIP volume and CO2 measurement accuracy. Findings show that Vd and mean Fi,CO2 are dependent on a human being's ventilation and route of breathing.

A method for system reliability analysis with change-over operation
Article Abstract:
Correlative operation diagram analysis (CODA) was developed as an evaluation technique for fault tree analysis (FTA) of machine systems reliability and human reliability. The CODA methodology breaks down a module into submodules to identify repetitive components. Module redundancies and module sequences then lead to hidden system premise events and compensatory actions. An FTA is then developed for the premise events and the reliability of the compensatory actions are analyzed.

Situation awareness and co-operation within and between hierarchical units in dynamic decision making
Article Abstract:
A field study of two military command teams included an experiment to test three organizations, serial, parallel and option, of cooperation and situation awareness. Most groups in the optional condition performed less well than the groups in the other conditions. Members of those in the parallel condition differed from those in the serial condition in situation awareness.
