Establishing effective U.S. - Japanese business alliances
Article Abstract:
A new interventionist global strategy is the organizational amalgamation of US labor and capital and Japanese management. Joint ventures, affiliations, and the location of Japanese subsidiaries in the US stem from economic frictions such as the high Japanese yen, the US trade deficit, and Congressional threats to implement restrictive trade barriers. The typical US management style of a rigid, conservative, top-down approach contrasts with a Japanese management style based on collectivism and reliance on interpersonal skills. A manufacturing alliance can profit from Japanese manufacturing innovations and product management systems. The low-average product costs and efficient volume outputs will permit aggressive pricing policies oriented toward global markets. Full adoption of the Japanese employment system is doubtful.

Building effective decision support systems
Article Abstract:
Three case studies of how decision support systems (DSS) have been successfully applied in practice are discussed. DSS are computer-based information systems which provide decision-makers with data and models which facilitate interactive decision-making. Cases are taken from the building materials industry, electric utility operations, and the baked goods industry. DSS processing consists of a database and decision models. The decision maker uses DSS to store, get, and manipulate information, structure problems, simulate proposed decisions, and evaluate alternatives. The outputs generated by the system can be used to issue status reports, forecasts, and recommend policies. DSS development strategy should be built around the needs of system users.
