How to select a gilt-edged investment
Article Abstract:
Private investors account for 15 billion pounds sterling worth of the United Kingdom government bond (gilt) market. Overseas and institutional holders account for the bulk of the market, but gilts can be purchased by private investors at post offices. There are four types of gilts in terms of redemption dates, undated stocks with no date set, longs with over 15 years to maturity, mediums with from five years to 15 years, and shorts, with under 5 years. Gilts held to maturity are low-risk, and they can also be traded prior to maturity.

Care beyond the community
Article Abstract:
Increased longevity and a higher proportion of the population over 65-years-old is likely to mean higher demand for care for the aged in the United Kingdom. The UK government had traditionally provided this care, but is withdrawing. Local government has had responsibility for long-term care since 1993 and their resources are limited. The Association of British Insurers and the government are examining ways in which individuals can save to pay for their own care.
