Bank interest rates and credit relationships in Italy
Article Abstract:
The relationship between the main bank and the borrower is not weakened by some degree of competition. An analysis of a sample involving individual credit lines granted by 83 Italian banks 2300 large and medium-sized Italian companies from 1987 to 1994 reveals that a borrower instead utilizes competition as an incentive to keep the relationship bank from extracting a monopoly rent. Interest rates are slightly affected by the degree of competition in the credit market.
