Barclays at a high point
Article Abstract:
Barclays shares have performed well in the three months to Oct 1996 and opinions are divided as to whether they will continue to outperform. Brokers rating the shares a buy include Kleinwort Benson which sees a positive outlook for dividends and earnings. NatWest favors buy-backs which enhance earnings, and also rates the shares a buy, as does Creit Lyonnais Laing. Panmure Gordon and UBS both rate the shares a sell, and Panmure is concerned about Barclays' operating performance.

HSBC ahead of red rule
Article Abstract:
HSBC shares performed better than those of UK banks as a whole in 1996. There are three brokers from a sample of six who rate the shares a buy, while two rate them a hold, and one is a seller. The buyers are Salomon Brothers, Goldman Sachs and NatWest Securities, and they emphasise the vitality of the bank's operations in south-east Asia. Credit Lyonnais and Collins Stewart are holders, while UBS is the seller and is concerned about Hong Kong mortgage margins.

Barclays: lording it
Article Abstract:
Lord Lawson is a non-executive director of Barclays Bank who has appeared in television adverts for M and G personal equity plans (Peps). M and G is a competitor of Barclays and the adverts have led to calls for Lawson's resignation from his post at Barclays due to the conflict of interest involved. His fee for the adverts was higher than his pay as a non-executive director. Lawson introduced Peps when he was the UK chancellor in 1986.
