Because it is a specialized job, telemarketing does not fit into the normal job selection criteria. To assist in the process, a 27-point hiring system has been developed. Determining interest in the job, work experience, ability to handle pressure and level of expected productivity are important. Voice quality and rapport over the phone are essential. The 27-point system can be used as an initial screening process, saving time and money.

Selection for new personnel for telemarketing begins even before the initial interview. There are many features of telemarketing that are not present in other jobs, so recruiters need to be sensitive to the differences. Management needs to have a thorough understanding of what the job is and the telemarketing environment is like before hiring people to fill the positions. Once the job criteria and personnel requirements are established, and interviewing strategy needs to be developed. Criteria for interviewing are provided.
