Bid to end discrimination
Article Abstract:
Companies are using sepcial dividends as part of takeover packages in the UK. These payments benefit higher rate taxpayers more than those not paying tax, including institutions. Higher rate taxpayers can use personal equity plans (Peps) for their holdings in electric utilities and thus gain a tax shelter. Investors will need spare capacity in their Peps and should assess the impact of transaction costs. Investors can also sell shares when the market price exceeds the takeover offer.
