No better, but no worse
Article Abstract:
The performance of United Kingdom companies does not appear to be deteriorating, though it is not improving. Some sectors were especially badly hit in winter 1998 to 1999, and they include breweries, general retailers and pubs and restaurants, but these sectors appear to have stabilized and to be recovering from downgradings and profit warnings. One company that does not appear to have recovered is Old English Pub Company which issued a profit warning in Feb 1999.

Brokers mellow in balmy heat of low interest rates and rising confidence
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom brokers' forecasts are optimistic as a result of increased consumer incomes and low rates of interest. A drop in the value of pound sterling should help exporters, and companies with interests in the Far East should benefit from economic recovery in that region. Arcadia has been affected by low consumer confidence, though sales improved in the 16 weeks prior to Jun 30 1999. Lonmin, meanwhile, should see some benefits from restructuring.
