Brokers' month to take it easy

UK brokers made 975 revised estimates of company profits in Dec 1997, according to The Estimate Directory. Of these, 564 were downgrades and 411 were upgrades. Five of the directory's 14 analysts have downgraded the stock of chemist Croda International, which has seen a decline in export margins. The most pessimistic downgrade, at 11%, for food retailer Safeway was made by Dresdner Kleinwort Benson. In total, seven brokers downgraded Safeway. The most optimistic upgrade for Royal Bank of Scotland was made by NatWest.

Some easing of the gloom
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom companies are encounteroing difficult trading conditions, and some have been hit by the strength of pound sterling, but there have been improvements for certain companies in early 1999. There were 416 downgradings by analysts in April 1999, compared with 370 upgradings for that month. Hillsdown may go private if the company's stock price does not rise following restructuring. Country Gardens has seen its forecast reduced by five analysts, with a drop of 13.4% in the consensus profit forecast.
