Bulling for Euroland
Article Abstract:
Stock prices in mainland Europe have been affected by a global downturn after peaking in Jul 1998, though they have still risen since the start of the year. There is increased uncertainty due to problems in Russia which especially affect Germany. There is still optimism about European stock prices as earnings forecasts are raised and interest rates drop, while liquidity inflows are strong, as is mergers and acquisitions activity. Some setbacks could occur, but the consensus is positive over thelonger term.

Getting riskier
Article Abstract:
Risks relating to holding European equities and bonds have increased, according to Goldman Sachs. Structural reforms such as those leading to greater labor market flexibility are less likely following French elections. Disagreements between Germany and France also threaten European monetary union. France and Italy could be worse hit, and Germany and Switzerland may offer more to investors. There are still benefits to holding European equities from the impact of weaker currencieson corporate earnings.

Looking for a safe haven
Article Abstract:
There is a debate as to whether stocks from mainland Europe could act as a safe haven if there are problems with US stock prices. Generally, stock prices in Germany and France have tended to perform worse than those of the US when US prices have fallen. European stocks could, however, undergo a more rapid recovery. This could be related to valuations, and to the pssibility of faster earnings growth in Europe. European stocks could alsobe helped if the euro rises in value.
