An opportunity from a crisis
Article Abstract:
CGU was created from a merger between General Accident and Commercial Union, and has seen a drop in its stock prices for the two years to Feb 2000, as well as a rise in the yield for the stock. The company has a strong presence in the Polish market, where pensions sales are expanding rapidly, and GGU's British life business is also performing well. The company ranks first among British life insurers in terms of European presence, and has achieved better than expected cost savings from the merger. The stocks have potential and are worth including in a portfolio.

CGU
Article Abstract:
CGU is being created from the merger of General Accident and Commercial Union. Views of the merger have been affected by problems of the insurance industry as a whole in the United Kingdom, and problems with a merger between Sun Alliance and Royal Insurance. CGU appears better placed to benefit from the merger, and the new company should benefit from links with building societies to distribute products. Cost savings in the United Kingdm should also help the new company.
