CONOCO TAKES FUN APPROACH: OIL GIANT USES VIDEOGAME TECHNOLOGY TO REACH LARGE AUDIENCE

Oil giant Conoco took a unique approach to promotion by working with EAI Interactive to create a CD-ROM that used video game technology to provide a multimedia presentation called ConocoLand. The project took about four months and cost $100,000. President and CEO Archie Dunham serves as a 'tour guide' and invites visitors to explore stops such as Lone Star Land, Deep Sea Land and Latin Land; take a virtual helicopter ride to a deep-water drilling ship; or use power generated by a major gas field to illuminate the London skyline. Each 'tour stop' includes an introduction, several interactive activities and a movie theater with films discussing the company's operations in a particular region. A data warehouse service that changes the focus from product to customer is being used by Federal Express Corp (FedEx) in order to speed its marketing and advertising campaigns. The 100 telemarketing and direct mail campaigns that FedEx engages in every year now have direct access to the information needed for customized and targeted use. The accuracy of marketing efforts can also be better by FedEx through the use of its data warehouse.
