Management is often unaware of the potential threats of industrial espionage and trademark piracy, but management can protect its interests by realizing that much of the harmful corporate espionage information comes from legal sources such as purchasing requirements, promotional budgets, and information from suppliers and sub-contractors. Management can prevent the leak of information by: educating all employees on security procedures; shredding all classified documents; and controlling the content of promotional material and employee articles. In addition to espionage, companies also need to be aware of counterfeiters who fake legitimate products. Product faking is estimated to be a 70 billion pounds sterling a year industry, and counterfeit parts have even been found on NASA's space shuttles.

Article Abstract:
When corporate directors and their outside accountants overlook security leaks, they leave themselves open to lawsuits originating from shareholders, the British government, insurers, and third parties (including consumers). Security is estimated to be the largest undisclosed liability for most British firms. Methods for minimizing corporate exposure to such risk are discussed, including: formulation of a business ethics policy, appointment of an individual to the position of security officer, budgeting for security, and establishing minimum security standards. Corporations are advised to begin their security strengthening programs by listing all possible sources of security risk, weighing the likelihood of such risks and the resultant damage, and devising a security control strategy.
