Middletown, CT-based marketing communications firm KGA Advertising Pres Ken Gronbach predicted that retailers will continue to experience increasing difficulty in recruiting store salespeople until 2010. He also suggested that retailers which normally depend on store sales staff as a critical part of their distribution chain ought to consider looking for innovative ways to operate with fewer people, such as point-of-purchasing materials. Gronbach predicted that the dearth of store sales staff would make video and video kiosks become critical tools.

Purina Mills Inc unveiled its first 'Americas Country Store' in Lake Saint Louis, MO. Upscale consumers who move from the cities and suburbs to rural areas to have a more country lifestyle are the target of the store. Purina Mills offer a distinctive barn-like facade at each 5,000 to 12,000-sq-ft America's Country Store location. The company is eyeing to open over 200 stores nationwide by the end of year 2000.
