Berry & Homer, a photography laboratory based in Philadelphia, PA, has received an exclusive contract from the Library of Congress to preserve historical pictures. The lab is renowned for its redundant fire-protection systems. Berry & Homer is run by owner and CEO Joe Thompson, and his son and executive vice president Joe Thompson III. The laboratory saw its sales increase by 20% in 1997. Thompson believes that Berry & Homer will post a similar performance in 1998. Thompson believes that success comes with maintaining ties with old clients through established technology. At the same time, Berry & Homer tries to grow by adopting technological advances.

Photographic supply retailers in the US ought to adopt 35mm index prints, stated Photo Porst AG general manager of photofinishing Manfred Baberg. Baberg's firm is the biggest photo retailer in Germany. The Advanced Photo System is quite popular in the US due to index prints. In fact, the 35mm format adopted index prints because of the Advanced Photo System, said Baberg. The digital index prints are considered more labor-intensive as far as order packaging and handling are concerned. Baberg also cited the emotional value placed by consumers on index prints.
