"Cherish Our Children" effort promotes literacy locally
Article Abstract:
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel of Milwaukee, WI, launched the 'Cherish Our Children' program for improving the literacy skills of children. Through the program, the newspaper provided a weeklong summer camp for 142 children. Milwaukee Journal also started a book drive that collected 145,167 new and slightly-used books, with 81,000 books given to children living in the city. The newspaper also received cash donations totaling $35,661, which was used in buying new back-to-school clothes for 558 children living in shelters.

The research unit of Fort Lauderdale, FL-based newspaper 'Sun-Sentinel' has been a considerably valuable asset to the paper in a fiercely competitive market. Sun-Sentinel research staff have been able to gather data which has enabled the publication to understand and anticipate the changing needs of its increasingly diverse customer base, while evolving with the market. The five-member marketing research unit is part of Sun- Sentinel's Strategic Planning Division and supports all the other departments.
