Chips advance but cost constraints remain
Article Abstract:
Companies such as Affymetrix and GeneTrace Systems are developing microchips that can perform advanced laboratory analysis. Affymetrix is developing a 1 cm by 2 cm silicon chip that can perform such sample preparation as DNA extraction and enzymatic digestion. The chip can also perform theromcycling through an architecture of independent thermoelectric coolers, vents and heaters. GeneTrace systems has developed a chip that can perform mass spectrometers without sample preparation.
