The port security conference is to be held in the aftermath of the presidential election to focus on port security programs that will include list of expert speakers, to discuss the nation's security subjects, one of them being Retired Coast Guard Adm. James Loy, deputy secretary at the Department of Homeland Security. The topics on the agenda that are discussed include topics such as liquefied natural gas terminals and cruise liners, port security risk assessments.

New port protection bill needed - Senate Counsel

Security for the American Ports is one of the most important Homeland Security challenges after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as much of the U.S. economy is dependent upon the ports. Carl Bentzel, senior Democratic counsel to the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee is of the opinion that a new port protection bill is needed for the implementation of the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002, reports the author.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is taking the lead to develop a path towards attaining security for the U.S. ports by using better information as well as working closely with the Department of Defense (DOD). Information is used to enlarge the security sphere surrounding a port to include not only the port but also to extend the network of transportation and business connections.
