Dealing with reality: a lesson for the City
Article Abstract:
John Corrin is one of two members of the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales who represent the industrial sector. An open critic of both the McFarlane and Cadbury reports for their depiction of executive directors asvillains, he is known in the council as an independent thinker, usually for industrial causes. Corrin castigates members of the Institute whose main preoccupation is to serve their self-interests. He is known for his obstinacy, sense of humor, frankness and unwillingness to compromise. However, Corrin is best described as a shrewd businessman who has established the Allied Textiles into a multi-national textile company. During his seven years as its chief executive, Allied Textile's turnover increased from 30 million pounds sterling to 129 million pounds and the profits from 2.5 million pounds to 12.7 million in a recessionary and competitive environment.

Enigma and variations
Article Abstract:
Glaxo Holdings Chmn Paul Girolami wins the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales' Founding Societies' Award for 1992 for his contributions to industry. Described as an enigma due to his ability to get both good and bad publicity, Girolami is responsible for transforming Glaxo from a disparate group of companies into UK's most valuable corporation. Girolami's approach to growth required Glaxo to focus on prescription drugs, produce its own quality products on a global basis, and distribute such products in all major markets. Girolami is specifically responsible for Glaxo's strong presence in the US and Japanese markets. Prior to becoming chairman, Girolami served as Glaxo's first finance director. The early part of his career saw him serve Chantrey & Button, Cooper Brothers, and Coopers & Lybrand as a chartered accountant.
