Pentium rivals see opportunity

Intel Corp.'s competitors are cashing in on the microprocessor giant's problems with its Pentium chip. Two company which hope to chip away at Intel's market share are Cyrix Corp. of Richardson, TX, and Sunnyvale, CA-based Advanced Micro Devices. The latter moved up the launching of its print ad campaign from Jan. 1995 to Dec. 1994. Meanwhile, NexGen Inc. of Milpitas, CA, registered higher sales of its Intel-compatible chip.

Intel Corp's domination of the 386 microprocessor market is being challenged by Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) and other rivals. In response, Intel is cutting its prices by 35% and is suing AMD for alleged copyright violations. To maintain its technological edge and market share in the semiconductor industry, Intel is spending considerable sums for capital investments and technology research.

Advertising a chip you'll never see

Intel Corp has initiated a $250-million international advertising campaign to promote brand awareness for its 386 and 486 microprocessors. The campaign is called 'Intel Inside' and has as its participants the computer manufacturers that use Intel microprocessors. Intel is utilizing television, magazine and outdoor advertising for this campaign.
