Discounters' share of groceries rises
Article Abstract:
According to a report from Mintel the number of discount food retail outlets in the UK increased from 960 in 1993 to 1,350 in 1997, with their share of the market growing in the same period from 0.6% to 2.3% and sales at discount retailers in 1997 reaching GBP 4.52bn, 33% up on the 1993 level at current prices. Nearly 60% of shoppers never use discount stores, while the biggest usage is among those dependent on benefits and families on constrained budgets. The growth in the importance of discounters has led to a growth in demand for budget own-brands at majors and an increasing tendency for shoppers to stock up on special offers.

UK: BORDEAUX WINE BODY TO ACT ON QUALITY
Article Abstract:
The regulatory wine body CIVB (Conseil Interprofessionel du Vin de Bordeaux) is to take action to reduce the amount of cheap, poor-quality Bordeaux wine available in the UK. This will hit leading UK supermarkets and off-licences from early next year. The UK and other leading export markets have complained at the unreliable quality of appellation controlee wines from the Bordeaux region. Total sales have fallen over 1999 and in the UK the off-trade for Bordeaux is showing only modest growth of 2% a year. CIVB will now step up monitoring of bottles for quality.
