Do biotech boffins make good bosses
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom biotech companies often pay executives large salaries though the companies are making losses. This has upset some investors who are also concerned about cases where corporate governance has been casual. Founders of biotech companies are increasingly being replaced by professional managers from the pharmaceutical industry. Carrying out a stock flotation may be easy, but managing the company is more difficult since it involves a number of activities such as making commercial agreements, and arranging trials for products.

No cure for biotech hangover
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom biotech companies have seen stock price falls and most companies in the sector have seen their value drop to half the level in Sep 1997 of the Sep 1996 level. Sentiment and news affect stock prices in this sector and a number of companies have had problems with drugs they have been developing. Positive news could lead to stock price rises in later 1997 since a number of licensing agreements may be announced. Some investors could be deterred after the performance of these stocks earlier in the year.

US authorities hold key to drug firm's future
Article Abstract:
British Biotech's stock price will be affected by the regulatory progress of the company's Zacutex drug, and Zacutex trials may not be accepted by the US authorities because the trials were tampered with by British Biotech scientists. The company's former head of research, Andrew Millar, examined the trials' results while they were in progress, which contravenes good practice. Zacutex was in phase 3 trials. Marimastat could also be affected and have one trial abandoned.
