How accurate are traditional quota opinion polls?
Article Abstract:
British public opinion polls using quota samples have continually overestimated the public support enjoyed by the Labour Party. This bias can be the result of differential refusal and evasion wherein Conservative voters are reluctant to state their voting preferences. Another defect of quota polls is that they provide interviewers with too few incentives to control refusal rates. Sampling methods employed by interviewers may also favor areas which are predominantly pro-Labour. These deficiencies reveal a need for innovations in polling methodologies.

So how well did they do? the polls in the 1997 election
Article Abstract:
British public opinion pollsters were not as successful in predicting the results of the 1997 UK elections as earlier thought. This can be gleaned from the number of important differences between the results of varying public opinion firms. These differences point to the relative effectiveness of the different polling methods that were employed and the need for pollsters to improve their polling methods. Differences in the results can be traced to issues that include the of use face-to-face quota polls and the adoption of random telephone sampling.

Are the opinion polls ready for 1997?
Article Abstract:
A study on the readiness of the opinion poll companies for the 1997 general elections in the UK has been conducted. The study takes into consideration the changes that have been implemented by the industry since the disastrous results of the 1992 general elections. It is argued that the mistakes that happened in 1992 have brought about the creation of a polling industry that is the most methodologically pluralist of its kind in its short existence.
