Don't rush in where angels fear to tread
Article Abstract:
UK venture capital trusts can offer both high rewards and present high risks. UK enterprise investment schemes (EIS's) have not proved attractive to investors, according to the tax authorities. Venture capital trusts are a new investment vehicle and it is uncertain whether their performance will be better. Both schemes have been devised to enourage investment in smaller companies, and tax relief is provided for long-term investment. EISs replaced business expansion schemes in Jan 1994.

Troubled enterprise
Article Abstract:
UK venture capital trusts (VCTs) are a new tax efficient investment vehicle with high levels of risk. The UK government aims to help small businesses through this measure. Some trusts have already been launched, but investors who decide to wait will be able to choose from later launches. The quality of a trust's manager is a key factor in deciding whether to invest. Managers should both have enough experience and enough staff to help them choose the best investments.

Local firms team up to help smaller companies
Article Abstract:
Financiers in Merseyside, England, are seeking to aid small businesses in the area through a program to invest 24 million pounds sterling in the eight to ten years from 1995. The program is called the Merseyside Special Investment Fund and is supported by the European Union. Companies have difficulty in raising small amounts of capital since institutional investors tend to invest large amounts. Some 130 start-ups could be aided through the new fund.
