Dueling graphics
Article Abstract:
New York bested San Francisco to become the U.S. Olympic Committee's (USOC) selection as candidate to host the 2012 Summer Games. While transportation, financing and facilities availability undoubtedly played a role in the selection, the design and graphics used in the 600-page bid document also played a role. Those in charge of New York's bidding process made sure that a consistently applied identity program was in place across all documentation and sporting events leading up to the USOC's selection. The competing bid failed to have this same unanimity of purpose. Article provides a detailed account of the bidding process and each city's presentation.

Optimal Optima Hermann Zapf restores flare to a classic typeface
Article Abstract:
Herman Zapf's optima were originally released in 1958 with two other major sans-serif types, Helvetica and Univers though critics were not sure of the way to classify it. Optima had no serifs, but it was not a monotone like a 19th century grostesque/ gothic and Zapf with the help of Linotype's Akira Kobayashi had allowed Optima's inscriptional roots to resurface by adding a titling typeface, featuring ligatures and nested letters.
