The most wonderful time of year
Article Abstract:
Stock prices tend to perform well in the month of January. This could be because investing in stocks is riskier in this month, but the evidence is unclear. There could also be a reaction after loss-making stocks are sold in Dec, but stocks tend to rise rather than fall in Dec. There could be a US influence, though the price rises in the US tend to be focused on small firms, and the UK market is more influenced by US indices focusing on larger firms. There may simply be corrections to previous overreactions in Jan every year.

Spring relief
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom stock prices tend to perform well each year, according to David Schwartz who has studied the history of the stock market. He sees January as the best month for stock prices, and April as the second best. One view is that uncertainty relating to the Budget tends to lead to stock sales beforehand, which pushes down prices prior to April, when they then rise. Prices can also rise in April in years when the Budget occurs in Nov, anf there is much that is unexplained about stock price behavior.
