Evaluation of work-rest schedules with respect to the effects of postural workload in standing work
Article Abstract:
The 60-minute shift-15-minute break work-rest schedule could significantly worsen the effects of postural work load on the back and legs. This was found in a study of 12 poultry inspectors who experienced greater back aches and lower-leg swelling with the 60-15 schedule, as compared with three other work-rest schedules, namely, 45 min shift-15 min break, 30 min shift-15 min break and 30 min shift-30 min break. A work-rest schedule with frequent short breaks would be less stressful to the spine, while one that has longer breaks would be more effective against leg swelling.
