Fabien Baron, or sex and a singular art director
Article Abstract:
Fabien Baron, the renowned art director of Calvin Klein advertisements, is known for using homocrotic imagery for promoting a product. An art director plays an important role in creating advertising images and giving meaning to them. Baron uses sexual images gleaned from the street life of urban culture to invest mundane products with sexual ambivalence and unique identities. Baron believes that sexiness and controversy push a company's image, as evidenced by the crotch grabbing images of the latest Calvin Klein advertisements which attach sexual satisfaction to the consumption of a product.

Teen magazine with a twist
Article Abstract:
Liberal feminist views and an emphasis on honesty and critical reading set apart the editorial policy of the teen magazine, Sassy, from its competitors. Although the economics of publishing dictate the acceptance of advertising accounts that attempt to manipulate the readers, the editors have parlayed this contradiction into part of the magazine's appeal. Hence, readers are encouraged to think for themselves and develop opinions on a variety of topics, similar to the way the staff has. However, despite critical success, the long-term viability of this format is still to be found out.

Time after time
Article Abstract:
'Time' magazine in the spring of 1992 underwent its first major redesign since 1977, opting for a more image-oriented, terse approach. This is apparently to keep pace with the increasingly impatient, younger market raised on video news and soundbites. However, the magazine's new identity is undefined, succeeding neither as detailed, organized reportage nor as bottom-line infotainment. This can be concluded from the greater use of news summaries and sensational covers. The history of 'Time''s design is also presented.
