Financial Report '90: British Telecom's employee video
Article Abstract:
British Telecommunications PLC (BT) commissioned United Television Artists to make a video informing BT employees of the firm's financial situation. Entitled 'Financial Report '90,' the video sought to explain to employees how much BT earned for FY 1990, how the profit was computed and where the surplus went. The video also emphasized that BT's 1990 pre-tax profit of 2.3 billion pounds sterling was not sufficient to carry out the company's capital expenditure program of 4.3 billion pounds. BT felt that a video was the most effective way of communicating with its nearly a quarter of a million employees all over the globe. United Television Artists advises companies that are interested in using video as a tool for communicating with employees to be mindful of maintaining objectivity lest the video be dismissed as nothing more than propaganda. Support from top management for such a project is also essential to ensure its success.
