Funds fall behind
Article Abstract:
HSBC's index trackers are not performing well, according to Skandia, an HSBC client. Micropal estimates that HSBC's UK Index fund has underperformed by over 8% in the five years to 1995, measured in cumulative terms. HSBC argues that all tracker funds underperform after management charges have been taken into account, and of they perform better than the index this could indicate volatility which could bring problems for investors since the index is not being shadowed.

Time to back income funds: Income funds have suffered at the hands of their growth fund rivals over the last year. Now it may be payback time
Article Abstract:
Investors need to concentrate on investing for recovery, rather than worrying about recession. Most economists feel that UK economic growth will improve in the third quarter and income funds will thus do better. The average UK growth unit trust has returned 0.8% more than the average UK equity income fund over the last 12 months, and the gap has recently widened. However although growth stocks will offer income in the future, high yielders will offer income now.
