Garban
Article Abstract:
Garban has been demerged from United News and Media, and has since has issued maiden results that have not been of comfort to investors, with a drop in pre-tax profit of 16% before interest and exceptionals. The company faces competition from computerized services with lower costs. Garban also had to withdraw from the inter-dealer broker market in the United Kingdom after a new order-driven trading system was launched by the Stock Exchange. The company has also faced racial and sexual harassment charges in New York. The company's balance sheet is strong and it could enter growth areas, but this involves acquisitions.

Execution-only shambles
Article Abstract:
Sharelink is offering poor service to clients but is opening a new call center to increase capacity. Like other UK brokers, the company faces increased demand as share prices rise. Five building societies are to demutualise and will issue around 16 million new shares which will further boost demand. Sharelink also faces the need to adapt to the new Crest electronic settlement system and this is affecting brokers as a whole so service standards are likely to decline.
