Regional newspapers
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom regional newspapers tend to be more popular than national papers among readers. Three major regional newspaper publishers have a large percentage of free papers which are heavily reliant on advertising, which is vulnerable to an economic downturn. Regional newspapers are also unable to increase cover prices without losing readership, so are doubly vulnerable to a downturn. They are also affected by tight regulations which hinder growth through acquisitions. Ownership of regional newspapers has changed as larger media groups sell their regional businesses, and regional papers have seen an improvement in their performance. They should also benefit from lower newsprint costs.

Caledonian publishing: reading difficulties
Article Abstract:
Caledonian Publishing plans a flotation in Jul 1996. The company owns the Evening Times and The Herald which as newspapers in Glasgow, Scotland. There is price competition in the UK newspaper market but Caledonian has previously avoided having to cut prices. The Herald accounts for some 80% of the Glasgow market for daily newspapers but there appears to be little opportunity for growth as the market is mature. The company aims to repay debts from a management buyout in 1992 using funds from the flotation.

Media
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom media industry includes regional newspapers and TV broadcasting. TV viewing is dropping with increasing numbers of people using the internet, but this should change as digital TV is introduced. Viewers' choices will be increased by digital TV, and channels will be geared to specific audiences. Digital radio will also be launched from Oct 1999, but is likely to spread more slowly than digital TV. Around 50% of listeners will own digital sets by 2010.
