Glaxo's antiviral ills not deemed contagious
Article Abstract:
London, England-based Glaxo Wellcome and Melbourne, Australia-based Biota Holdlings failed to gain approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for their influenza treatment preparation zanamivir (Relenza). Relenza was the first neuraminidase inhibitor to reach an FDA committee. The decision against approval may herald regulatory problems for similar drugs. Competing companies are reticent about offering comments, however industry sources are minimizing the committee's rejection and blaming design flaws in the North American phase III trial instead of the design of the drug itself.

Making prevention pay
Article Abstract:
The threat of biological weapons and the easy availability of funding for biodefense from the United States government have resulted in an increase in the research and development of many new vaccine and anti-infective programs at many biotech companies. The development of new technologies may help in reinvigorating vaccine research but it is difficult to reduce the gap between the discovery of the disease and the production of an effective vaccine.
