Green on pay?
Article Abstract:
National Provident Institution (NPI) is giving greater weight to pay rises for board members in selecting investments for ethical funds. The company plans to discuss the issue with independent financial advisers. Eiris, a company providing ethical information, is setting up a service allowing clients to exclude companies with 'unethical' approaches to directors' salaries. Friends Provident, meanwhile, is more concerned over how decisions are made on directors' pay than actual levels of pay.

All about options
Article Abstract:
Share options for UK executives became popular from the mid-1980s after tax rates were reduced by Norman Lamont, chancellor at that time. Lamont changed the tax rules so profits were taxed on capital rather than income. Share options may provide rewards which are not linked to the abilities of directors. Performance clauses have been introduced by some firms, and others have introduced long-term incentive schemes. These schemes tend to be linked to compensation paid for by shareholders.
