Growing data backup demand reviving restructured Archive

Article Abstract:

Archive Corp's hostile takeover of Cipher Data Products Inc resulted in losses for the manufacturer and distributor of computer storage devices. Since the takeover in Apr 1990, Archive's earnings began to decline steadily until the 4th qtr of 1991. However, due to the firm's restructuring moves and the increasing use of back up in the computer industry, Archive made a successful rebound in the 1st qtr of 1992 with $813,000 in earnings. Archive again registered an increase in earnings during the 2nd qtr of 1992 to $2.4 million, more than doubling its profits for the same quarter of 1991.

Quaker Oats Co's failure to boost Fisher-Price Inc's (FPP) into a promotional and electronic toy manufacturing giant led to the cereal firm's divestiture of the toy firm. The spin-off, handled by FPP CEO Ronald Jackson, led to a corporate turnaround and reshuffled the focus from promotional and electronic toys to infant and pre-school toys. The shift was designed to accommodate the toy firm's target market, consisting of parents from the former baby-boom generation.
