Article Abstract:
The Founding Societies' 1990 Award Winner is Racal Electronics and Racal Telecom Chmn Ernest Harrison. Harrison joined Racal in the 1950s as an accountant when the firm employed only 12 people, and succeeded founding partner Ray Brown in 1966 as the head of the company after Brown's appointment as head of UK defense sales. Racal Electronics is currently valued at 3 billion pounds sterling and Racal Telecom is worth 3.8 billion pounds sterling. Racal Telecom operates the successful Vodaphone cellular telephone network. The company is planning on investing 140 million pounds sterling to improve the infrastructure in 1990. Racal Telecom was floated off from Racal Electronics to increase the value of the business and to avoid an unfriendly takeover. Harrison predicts that data and voice networks will be very profitable business venues for Racal in the 1990s.

A problem shared
Article Abstract:
European firms can enjoy cost-savings between 30% to 60% by establishing shared service centers. The shared service concept involves consolidating business support functions provided by various departments and branch offices into a single business unit. The unit will serve internal customers and will be responsible for the quality and costs of services. Types of functions often transferred to shared services centers include transaction processing, finance and purchasing. However, companies planning to establish a shared service center must realize that management commitment to the plan is essential to success. Efforts must also be made to address the concerns of employees whose jobs will be affected by the change.
