The double-edged sword of foreign investment
Article Abstract:
There is increasing foreign interest in Sweden's profitable multinationals and overseas investors are estimated to own some 27% of the stock market, against under 10% in 1991. The trend is for foreign ownership in the big multinationals to continue rising. A serious problem for the many large Swedish companies is the lack of a domestic capital base, while Swedish investors are handicapped by high taxes on dividend and capital gains. Some fear the slow takeover of Swedish industry by overseas investors, while others welcome the injection of foreign capital.
