Article Abstract:

The Russian financial crisis in mid-summer 1998 affected the stabilization of international financial markets and economic status of OECD countries. Some OECD countries, such as the US, resorted to swaps and credit spreads that forced the surge towards liquidity. Prices of equities declined and contributed to the emergence of the bearish market. The concerns regarding deteriorating conditions in international financial markets and scarcity of foreign investments were slightly appeased with reduction in interest rates.

The financial markets in the countries belonging to the OECD have witnessed a tremendous increase in financial activity due mainly to the onrush of syndicated borrowing and non-underwritten facilities in 1995. Most of these countries have been able to subdue inflationary pressures and maintain a moderate economic growth rate.

Article Abstract:

The countries belonging to the OECD generally subscribe to two corporate governance models. These are the 'insider' and 'outsider' models where the former incorporate a wider range of stakeholders in addition to management and shareholders while the latter depend on capital market discipline for their effectiveness.
