How not to mount a professional project: the formation of the ICAEW in 1880

Article Abstract:

A study on formation of professional bodies is presented. If the criteria for membership are relaxed, the professional institute loses its value due to lack of exclusivity. However, if the stringent method of deciding on members has the effect of leaving more people out of the professional institute, then there is the danger of them forming a rival institute. This dilemma was faced by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales at the time of its formation in 1880.

Non-executive directors in the Netherlands: another expectations gap?

Article Abstract:

There was an unrealistic expectation gap among the people in Britain regarding non-executive directors main function and their effectiveness and importance in the existing corporate governance structure. According to a survey conducted by the British government it was revealed that this was due to the lack of confidence by the public on corporate governance and a gap with respect to the interestsE that non-executive directors should serve.
