Book trade opts for price free-for-all
Article Abstract:
UK book publishers are abandoning an agreement to keep prices at set levels. Book retailers are to discount books and this could lead to problems for the smaller bookstores which may lose market share. The cost of production has risen with paper costs going up, while demand is slack. Publishers have been withdrawing from the agreement from 1993, and it is no longer workable. The agreement regulates the price of books for six months after they are published.
